GriffonCo 3D Printed Miniatures & Gifts

all about OUR STUFF

We currently use two different types of 3D Printers -- FDM and DLP. The difference between the two is the detail, material, and the process in which it prints. We use our FDM printers most often, as they work great and the prints are cheaper for our customers.

In a nutshell, Resin is of higher quality and finer detail, but the process to clean up the resin and finalize a DLP print is extensive, which causes the detail and value to be higher. PLA prints are durable, cheap to produce, and can be done on a larger scale.

We use our Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printer for our larger prints. This is the most common 3D printer, and it uses a thermoplastic filament that is heated and melted, then extruded (one layer at a time) to create a 3D Printed product. The material which we use most often is PLA (Polylactic Acid) filament. PLA is a biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic aliphatic polyester that comes from renewable resources such as corn starch. PLA comes in a wide variety of colors and styles. Note: While we can custom print with PETG, we will not print with ABS.

PLA is not suitable for high temperatures; even things like being left in a hot car can cause parts to soften or deform. PLA is best for cosplay and decorative application. PLA is sturdy in adult hands but can easily be broken if dropped or care is not taken. PLA is not as strong and sturdy as ABS (what a Lego is made from), but it will last and work perfectly for tabletop gaming needs with care and consideration. PLA is not dishwasher safe. We do not trust the PLA printing process to consider PLA a food-safe option.

We use our DLP Printer for our fine detail resin prints. A DLP (digital light processing) Printer uses a liquid resin that uses photopolymerization when exposed to UV light, layer by layer to form substantial layers that stack to create a 3D Printed object. We use our DLP printer to print small, fine detail prints such as miniatures. The process to clean and finalize a DLP print is extensive, which causes the detail and value to be higher.

We currently use a mixture of a general-purpose resin and a flexible resin to produce a 3D print that is less brittle and fragile than that of one single type. The flexible resin allows us to have a little bit of "bend" in our prints. Warning: As with any miniatures, these are fragile and will break without care. Resin prints should not be confused with flexible "army guys" as you would buy at the big box store.
